Microfilaria test center in Navi Mumbai. India has the largest population of infected people with lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the world. These are caused by parasitic worms called microfilariae (Mff). They live in the bloodstream of humans and infective stage larvae migrate to lymph nodes where they develop into adults that produce eggs. The adult worm produces thousands of microfilariae that circulate in the blood until they reach the lymph node.
In the lymph node, the microfilariae mature into L4 larvae, which become sexually mature after approximately two days. The female worm then releases millions of eggs per day. If the eggs enter the body through the skin, they can travel to any organ including the eyes and brain. The parasite can cause serious harm if left untreated.
What are the symptoms?
There are three types of symptoms associated with LF. First, the patient may have no symptoms at all. Second, patients can experience pain, swelling, tenderness, or inflammation of the legs, especially around the groin area. Third, patients may have other complications including severe anemia, swollen glands, weight loss, fever, headache, weakness, and nausea.
How do we get it?
The disease is spread through mosquitoes that bite both human beings and animals. Mosquitoes usually carry the parasites from one person to another when they bite. Humans become infected when they come into contact with mosquito bites while being bitten by an infected mosquito. Most people who are infected with the disease never know that they are carrying the parasites.
