The HbA1c test determines the two to three-month average blood sugar level. This test calculates the percentage or mmol/mol amount of blood sugar that is bound to hemoglobin. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein pigment with a red colour. These red blood cells have a three-month lifespan. Results show average blood glucose levels over three months.
